Tips for New Teachers

Well, I'm only into my 3rd 6 weeks of teaching.  That means I'm still a NEW teacher myself :) but I've learned some things that might help someone just getting started on their teaching adventure.

Most importantly, I've realized all the talk about the importance of procedures is TRUE!  I find myself tweaking procedures, reteaching, etc., but the key I think is to keep at it!  If kids don't know what to do, they will find something to do and it won't be what you want them to do.

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.  It shows you are teachable.  Teachable people make better teachers.  Every teacher I know is overwhelmingly busy but there hasn't been one on my campus I've approached who hasn't been willing to answer a question, give advice, or lend an ear.

Some days you will wonder if you are in the right place.  It will get better!  It's a bit of a roller coaster ride.  Some days are really good and some days are really bad.  Hang in there and keep riding.  I bet you find some joy all along the way!

  1. Your comment that if kids don't know what to do, they will find something to do is exactly right. Transitioning from one task to the next was a problem for me, especially at first. It's getting better each day. Thanks for the great advice!
